Do an experiment; ask members of your team to write down the purpose of the team’s current innovation and see if everyone shares the same precise purpose. Is there a lot of agreement, or disparity? If you do not create a strong, viable purpose, your efforts will be scattered and undirected.
Ask these questions before you begin, while you are working on the innovation and after you think you have finished.
This is also true of ANYTHING you are working on with another person.
At the beginning of your next meeting try asking everyone to write down the purpose of the meeting. Compare notes. You might be suprised. I know I was! Just because something is crystal clear to you doesn’t mean everyone else sees the same picture. Getting clarity on what you are trying to accomplish is the first step to getting it done right the first time. Even when you think you have communicated clearly it is good idea to check it out.
